My Project

When Devyn Edelstein and I were choosing our senior project, we discussed our love for travel and experiencing new culture in other countries. In addition, we also talked about our passion for kids and the potential interest in a job in the medical field. We plan to not only see if the medical field is suitable for us, but also to see a different part of the world and the children that are a part of it.
Jackie Pearson, a pediatric oncology nurse at Children's Healthcare (Scottish Rite), offered to let Devyn and I shadow her for 8 hours on Thursday, April 7th. Before Thursday, we will research the hospital, oncology, and pediatrics in general so we are fully prepared for the shadowing. For the beginning of the week, we decided we would volunteer somewhere that involves kids. We called Sheltering Arms, a childcare facility in Atlanta, and asked if they would allow us to volunteer for three days (Monday-Wednesday). After scheduling the hours with Sheltering Arms, we talked to our sponsor, Angela Morris-Long, who helped us find a program in Ladyville, Belize that takes volunteers that want to help out and stay in the orphanage. So during the second and third week, we will travel to Belize and volunteer in the orphanage. Before we leave for Belize, we plan on spending a good amount of time researching about where we are going, the orphanage, the culture, and more. The main focus of this project will be to create a short video that the orphanage and company could put on their website to show people what the orphanage is like.
Once we arrive back to Atlanta, we will be shadowing the head ER surgeon at Grady Hospital, Brian Morse, for two full days. During this project, we hope to explore the medical field and learn more about children in America and in other parts of the world. We believe that this project will have a huge impact on our lives not only because of the children in Belize, but because of the future college major interests.
